Children of the Rising Sun, Malindi, Kenya

The Shanta Foundation has sponsored a project in Malindi, Kenya, Children of the Rising Sun Orphanage through the Lion’s Club of Enfield.

Children of the Rising Sun Orphanage was established in 1994 in the village of Msabaha near Malindi, Kenya. The orphanage is dedicated to the welfare and education of orphans and children from disadvantaged background.

The institution has progressed from an orphanage to providing nursery and primary school education totaling 800 students. There is however a need to offer continuous education by establishing a secondary school. It is also long-term aim of the charity to establish a vocational training centre on site. This initiative will provide valuable skills for students and also serve as a resource for the wider community. Shanta Foundation provided funding to enable the establishment of a Secondary School for this outstanding organisation.

Swiss Cottage School in London is a special needs school. It is a leader in its field and is recognised for its best practice model and as a showcase school. It comprises of a primary school, secondary school and sixth form, providing integrated education and therapeutic health provision for 260 pupils aged 5 to 19. The school student population has grown and even though supported by the government, not all the funding needs of the school can be met. There was an urgent need for two modified minibuses to enable pupils to be taken on local, regional and national school trips. The existing buses are no longer road worthy. Contribution towards funding of two specially modified buses by Shanta Foundation will not only enable pupils to broaden their horizons, but also nurture their growth and development.
